Switzerland has concluded agreements with various countries on the exchange of young professionals. These enable young people who have completed their education (at least a bachelor’s degree or a two-year apprenticeship) and who wish to broaden their professional and language skills in Switzerland to obtain a work permit for a maximum of 18 months. Nationals of the following countries are eligible:
Argentina, Australia, Canada, Chile, Indonesia, Japan, Monaco, New Zealand, Philippines, Russia, South Africa, Tunisia, Ukraine, USA
The purpose of the stay as a Young Professional is career development. Young professionals are required to work in the profession that they have learned or in the field of their studies. Part-time work or self-employment is not allowed. Young professionals must be paid according to local and industry rates (see box for details).
If you are a Young Professional seeking employment in your profession or field of study in Switzerland, you are responsible for finding a job. The application must be submitted to the competent authorities in your home country.
Below you will find more information about the admission procedure and the exact requirements, the official application form, a standard employment contract and information on rights at work.
The assignments for young professionals (trainees as defined in Article 42 of the Ordinance on Admission, Residence and Employment; OASA RS 142.201 de/fr/it) are work experiences for people who have completed their training. Remuneration is in line with local and sectoral standards, taking into account collective labour agreements and cantonal guidelines. The salary should be at least at the level of people at the beginning of their career. Further information can be found in the guidelines for young professionals (see below).
