The Global Forum on Migration and Development (GFMD) is an informal discussion forum. Its objective is to promote an exchange of experiences and cooperation on migration and development between countries and other stakeholders, such as international organisations, civil society, cities and the private sector. The forum, based in Geneva, was established in 2007 as a process outside the UN on the initiative of the then UN Secretary-General, Kofi Annan, following the High-level Dialogue on Migration and Development. Every UN member state is free to participate in the GFMD and its chair rotates annually.
Switzerland has supported the forum since its creation and is an active participant in its discussions. As a member of the GFMD steering committee, it also participates in defining its orientation. In 2011, Switzerland was chair of the GFMD.
