Centre of competence for quantum metrology

Objective

The Federal Institute of Metrology METAS is establishing a centre of competence for quantum metrology. The idea is to provide Switzerland with the optimal metrological foundations for the second quantum revolution as a centre of research and industry. The aim is to make new quantum technologies measurable, comparable and reliable.

Tasks

In order for quantum computers, secure quantum cryptographic communication systems and high-precision quantum sensors to be used and compared worldwide, they must be tested and made traceable back to the International System of Units (SI). METAS develops calibration and test procedures for this and provides the necessary infrastructure.

Topic areas

  • Electrical quantum standards for current, resistance and voltage: quantum Hall and Josephson effect (DC and low frequency)
  • Electrical field strength sensors using Rydberg atoms (high frequency)
  • Atomic clocks: atomic clocks already define Coordinated Universal Time and seconds. With optical atomic clocks, it will be possible to define the second orders of magnitude more precisely in future. (Time and frequency)
  • Time and frequency dissemination (time and frequency)
  • Quantum networks and quantum cryptography (photonics)
  • Single photon and entanglement (photonics)

Focal points

Quantum communication: Testing of quantum cryptographic systems and single-photon detectors as well as setting up tests according to relevant standards.

Quantum computers: Characterisation and measurement of qubits and other key components.

Quantum sensing: Application of new measurement methods using Rydberg atoms or other methods for extremely sensitive field strength measurements.

Importance for Switzerland

The centre will strengthen confidence in quantum technologies and gives Swiss companies an international competitive advantage. In this way, the precision and quality for which Switzerland is known will also be carried over into the quantum age.
